Chewy Trail Mix Bars

Nature Valley is best known for their hard, crunchy often crumbly granola bars. They have a new product out, Sisters and Brothers, a "Chewy Trail Mix" bar that comes in five flavors. Today, your Chocolate Priestess will look at the "Dark Chocolate & Nut" variety.

The six 1.2 oz bars come individually wrapped and the nutritional information is for one of these bars making it easy to control portion size. Each bar has 140 calories, 1g saturated fat, 100mg sodium, 1g dietary fiber, 15g sugars, and 2g protein along with 2% of the daily iron an adult needs. The very little amount of fiber really surprises and disappoints me. Semisweet chocolate chunks are the third ingredient on the list which surprises me as you'll see in the next paragraph. These also contain peanuts, soy, milk, sunflower, almonds, oats, and rice for those of you with allergies.

As you can see, the bars have small chunks of dark chocolate in them and not a lot of them so before I ever eat it I suspect this will not meet our needs in The Chocolate Cult very well. One bar measures 3.75 X 1.25 X 0.75 inches. Primarily I smell the oats and peanuts but there is a light scent of chocolate. It is very sticky in my hands and on the plate itself. The primary flavors as I chew, it doesn't really crunch but certainly makes a bit of a noise, are the oats and peanuts. If I take a bite that has more of the chocolate chunks then I start to taste them. While I can see a raisin from time to time, I don't taste them.

Overall, Nature Valley Chewy Trail Mix "Dark Chocolate and Nut" did not impress me from either a cocoa or general taste perspective. It doesn't taste bad in any sense but it also didn't taste very sweet, very chocolaty, and doesn't really have enough fiber or meet my morning needs.

Sisters and Brothers, may you too take the time to slowly appreciate what the Divine and human ingenuity have offered you in chocolate.

Cool blog you have and Congrats on the foodie blogroll!
Thanks, Pam. I've been doing this since late February so I'm surprised by how well it is going.
I adore these granola bars. I've eaten my fair share (I had them for the first 4 months after my son was born as my diaper bag emergency food item.) They make me happy.
I saw you on the Foodie Blogroll, we're both new so I thought I'd check out your site. I'm totally subscribing because I LOVE chocolate. If there is no chocolate in my apt, I know it's past time to go shopping.
Thanks for commenting and sharing your opinion, Crystal. Part of my starting The Cult was getting my chocoholism under control and it might sound strange but even with far more chocolate in the household than ever before, I'm healthier, weigh less, and more picky about the chocolate products I'll use.
sweet blog! follow along with me and get in on the giveaways pam
