I love it when we get a product from a new to us brand. Magic Chocolate has been making unique chocolate bars for years, but they are just about to launch their new line of truffle layer bars. We're going to look at four varieties of these new bars and see how much they meet a truffle definition, and if their offering matches what we want here on The Chocolate Cult. We were sent one bar of each flavor for free in exchange for writing an honest article about our experiences with them; no other form of competition was received.
The first thing to note about these bars is that they are actually four, individually wrapped sections under one wrapper for a total of 3.1 ounces or 22.6 grams. Each of the sections is 4.5 inches long and 3/8 inch thick. They reminded me of a double length Kit Kat. The ingredients and identity as candy vs chocolate bar varied according to the variety, so that will be mentioned as we look at each one. Interestingly, each variety lists organic rosemary extract though why, I'm not sure, maybe we'll find out.
The Salted Candied Hazelnut Truffle bar is an oatmilk chocolate candy bar; organic cane sugar is the first ingredient listed on the wrapped with cocoa butter in third place and cocoa bean at seventh place. The listing of "cocoa beans" is strange, I don't recall seeing such a listing on either a chocolate or candy bar before. Magic Chocolate uses oatmilk because "Oat milk has a natural sweetness & creaminess similar to cow’s milk, but with a lower environmental impact. Additionally, oat milk has a lower environmental impact than many popular dairy alternatives, such as almond, coconut, and cashew milk." We've had chocolate made with non-dairy "milk" in the past; I hoped this one would be better. The bar has a intense creamy fragrance with a strong hazelnut scent; the chocolate is very light at this level of my senses. The section is slightly soft to my fingertips and it has a fudgylike texture when I take a bite. Each chew makes a soft crunch when it encounters a hazelnut (or almond) which also releases a burst of salt. The chocolate flavor just isn't really there and it reminds me of a weak hazelnut chocolate spread. The oatmilk isn't an issue here but I would cut down on the amount of salt in this so that the chocolate as a chance to compete.Next up in the Salted Candied Hazelnut Truffle Layer Bar made with oatmilk and dark chocolate. Similar to the previous bar, this, too, is a candy bar with organic cane sugar and hazelnuts the first two ingredients. However cocoa beans and cocoa butter are listed at third and fourth place so this should have a strong chocolate flavor. The chocolate fragrance is much stronger and basically covers most of the hazelnut and creamy scents. See the top and bottom layers are the chocolate while the inside is an oatmilk chocolate with hazelnuts though not as many as seen in the previous bar. The top and bottom layers make a soft snap when I bite through them. Everytime I bite into a hazelnut (or almond) I get a burst of that salt and sweetness but it blends well with the darker chocolate at first. Over time that salt level increases, so eat it slowly if you want more of the chocolate and less salt. Alternatively, you can let it melt in your mouth to increase the hazelnut creaminess more but the salt really hits at the end if you choose that approach. I liked this variety far more than the previous bar because the chocolate essence is more dominant.I saved what I hope will be the best for last: Hazelnut Crunch Truffle bar with dark chocolate. This is a chocolate bar because organic cocoa beans and hazelnuts are the first two ingredients; organic cane sugar is the third followed by organic cocoa butter. This should be the old I love and don't want to share, but I have to test it as I have the others before I can declare that. Like the first bar, this one is a single layer, much darker in color showing the amount of cacao in it compared to the other ingredients. Similarly, this has a strong chocolate fragrance with a hint of hazelnuts. Those hazelnut pieces are larger and more numerous if you look at the photo. The section makes almost no sound when I take a bite, only crunching when I hit a nut. The chocolate and hazelnut flavors blend wonderfully together, both competing on my tongue with the chocolate winning out just slightly by the end. The creaminess and sweetness is there but there is also a wonderful bitterness to this. The texture, much like the first bar, is fudgy, though firmer to my fingertips and in my mouth. This nudges out the previous bar to be my number one of the three I tested. How much of a role did the rosemary extract play in the flavor? If I thought about it, I could identify it, but really I think it just added a bit of uniqueness to the bars without ruining the chocolate flavor. The same question could be asked of the almonds that were on each ingredient list. This was actually problematic because The Chocolate Cult's raspberry expert can't have tree nuts, so I had to have another volunteer assistant check it out for us; I personally hate raspberry so my testing it was also not a fair idea. This is what that volunteer said about the bar: This will be updated when the bar has been tested. There you have it, Magic Chocolate's new truffle bars. Of the four flavors, only the Hazelnut Crunch Truffle is a chocolate bar versus a candy bar. With the highest level of chocolate flavor and good balance of flavors, this was definitely my favorite. Given the brand's dedication to fair trade, organics ingredients, and alternative ingredients that don't hid the chocolate behind the veneer of "healthy" this qualifies as our first Sacrament worth chocolate of 2026!
