Can this Cheesecake Crack Your Taste Buds?

Tuesday, July 30, 2019, will be National Cheesecake Day so let's look at a product that claims it has the same flavor. You've all heard of peanut butter, right? We've talked about other types of nut butters out there some used in gourmet chocolate and some we've tested simply on toast or other such foods. Today I want to introduce you to a new brand of nut butter. Cracked Nut Butter comes in 4 flavors - Cheesecake, Brownie Batter, Cookie Dough, and Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough. These promoted as high protein dessert spreads. They are made out of cashews so my hubby can't even try this but I could and so could many of our friends so I used it in a few different ways. I was sent the Cheesecake variety through the Amazon Vine program in exchange for writing a review of the product on that website; this article is just a bonus. No other form of compensation was received

Let's investigate the protein claim first. 2 tablespoons of this spread has 10g of protein. The peanut butter I keep on hand has 7g protein. Both have 180 calories per 2T so what are the calories made of? Cracked has 13g total fat, peanut butter15g total fat. Cracked has 3g sugars while peanut butter has 4g sugars. Depending on your nutritional goals, one may be slightly better than the other but the appeal isn't protein but simply not peanuts or perhaps just looking for different flavors. In terms of flavor the Cracked tastes exactly like cheesecake but the texture is not as spread which will be important when I used it with foods.

I tried it on several types of toast and it tasted pretty good though I must confess that I still like peanut butter or chocolate and peanut butter or hazelnut spreads better This spread is very sweat, too, so if you have a limit for how much sweetness you like, be aware of that. It spreads well on warm items, but right out of the jar it tends to be a bit dry and a challenge to spread. I find when this is the case it is easier to use more than you may ideally want to because the serving size won't as easily cover the same amount of surface. This chocolate focaccia that I made and topped with this spread is a good example of that. As you can see in the photo particularly if you click on it so you can look more closely, the nut butter is not smooth.

However if such a spread is merely one of several layers of ingredients it looks just fine as in this photo of a slice of this dessert bread with whipped cream, blue berries, and strawberries added. The texture was very distracting and really didn't mess well with the bread, the chocolate chips in it, and the other topping layers.
