Sometimes we get products that don't actually qualify to be covered on The Chocolate Cult. When that happens, I remind the brand that we only review products that use ingredients from the cacao tree, usually the beans found in cocoa pods. In this case, we were sent all three of Alter Eco's granola bags even though only one of them has the necessary ingredients. Yes, I checked and double-checked. So before I talk about their No Sugar Added Dark Chocolate Granola, let's get the legal statements out of the way. I received this bags of granola in exchange for sharing my honest opinions about the products after testing them; no other form of compensation was received.
The fourth and fifth ingredients in this granola are dark chocolate and cocoa powder, both organis; that's two of the eight ingredients that are derived from cacao beans. The sweetner used for this is monk fruit (the last ingredient) but date powder is also listed; that explains the difficult to describe sweetness. The cocoa flavor is strong and it's presence may be part of the reason why eating this dried my mouth out; darker chocolate and cocoa powder absorbs moisture in your mouth, folks. I don't consume a lot of granola, honestly I only get it when I'm sent it to review or a breakfast buffet. The cocoa is so intense, this is not something I'd want to have daily, but it is a good burst of energy, crunch, and cocoa occasionally.
One of The Chocolate Cult's Acolytes (those kind folks who help me test products by following my procedures) tested the other two varieties of Alter Eco granola just so I could report: The Cashew Butter was enjoyed by our testers who liked it solo or as an added ingredient. The Cinnamon Raisin wasn't cinnamon enough for our testers and the raisins weren't juice or sweet.
The Dark Chocolate Organic Granola is not chocolate enough to really earn Sacrament Status since by its nature the flavor and form is oat based; in this case, oats no nuts or other grains. This is definitely worth you checking out if you love dark chocolate or cocoa and oat based granolas.
