Hostess Donettes

Sisters and Brothers, Hostess is one of the most recognized companies in America with a Midwestern start in 1925 in Indianapolis. Sometimes companies last a long time because they have great products, sometimes because they have great marketing. Marketing is, sadly, probably more important of those two because if you can convince someone your product is great at a good price, they'll buy it. Do the chocolate "Donettes" from Hostess have both a great price and a great product to recommend them?

Marketing they certainly have. Since 1995 they have become the largest United States "wholesale baker of fresh delivered bread and cake" according to their website. You can find their products in grocery stores, discount stores, and gas stations around the country. I grew up thinking that Hostess was great because was reasonably priced and widely available.

Today, following the Path I can re-evaluate their chocolate donettes from a more mature and informed position. Each donette is approximately 1.5 inches in diameter so these are mini-donuts that you can either eat in one huge bite or several. I prefer to take 3-4 bites each myself. Three donettes equals one serving with the following content according to the nutritional label: 9g saturated fat — this is 45% of the daily fat an American adult should be consuming per day, Sisters and Brothers! Each serving also has 15mg cholesterol, 160mg sodium, 13g sugars, 2g protein, and 2% of the daily iron for an American adult.

Each donette feels waxy to the touch because frankly there are a lot of additives in these compared to the amount of cocoa. They also taste waxy like they are coating your tongue and mouth but do have a chocolate flavor as well. The chocolate ganache over the plain cake donut is actually thin so most of what you are eating is the cake itself. Now they are very tempting, I don't know many folks who only eat three donettes but I think it's more the sugar and fat that pulls our taste buds than the cocoa content. Any buzz you might feel is that downward flow that sugar creates and not the mind affecting thrill of cacao itself.

After eating this product recently I have to say that I really don't think they are my best choice any more for donuts in the morning or any other time. The taste to nutritional balance is not what your Chocolate Priestess needs in her life. Only you can determine what a good balance is for you but I hope this revelation has helped you make a more informed decision.

Sisters and Brothers, may you too take the time to slowly appreciate what the Divine and human ingenuity have offered you in chocolate.

I don't like the waxy taste from these donuts. They leave a weird taste in my mouth. I prefer the Entenmann's popettes
I'm not sure I've had the popettes before. Entenmann's should send us some to try out.

Thanks for sharing your experience, Nancy!
