Popcorn & Chocolate

Christmas 2010 was a quite affair at your Chocolate Priestess's house as it normally is with only 2-3 people around the day of.  But we throw parties and attend parties for weeks before so such quiet is welcome.  We got some very nice gifts and I wanted to review one of these for you.  I know, I know, it's months ago but I can't review this particular gift until we ate it.

The White Chocolate Acolyte's parents sent us six bags of popcorn from Popcorn Indiana which is NOT in Indiana at all but Englewood, New Jersey!  They have a lot of different flavors of popcorn though it all seems to be Kettle Corn so it is sweet.  They sent us "Cinnamon and Sugar" and "Caramel" along with a microwave pouch but those aren't chocolate.

They did send us three varieties that were chocolate.

The first we tried was the "Dark Fudge Chocolate Chip Kettlecorn" that came in a 6 oz bag.  It has no transfats, it is gluten free, but contains milk and soy if you have those allergies.  It also has cocoa, chocolate liquor and cocoa butter so this is the real deal in terms of chocolate.

The tiny chips were visible in the thick ribbons of dark chocolate but these ribbons tended to cluster up the popcorn while other pieces were left untouched though this rate wasn't high, maybe 10% was untouched by any chocolate.  It tasted really good, a nice blend of sweet, bitter and salty.

Similar to this was the "Dark Fudge Chocolate Chip Kettlecorn" which was almost identical to the previous bag in terms of nutritional values.

Furthermore when I poured out the popcorn, it really didn't look that different either.  Some of the chocolate ribbons looked like it might be slightly darker but was that reality or my expectation?

Finally there was the "Drizzled Black & White Kettlecorn".  Surprisingly this also had almost identical nutritional values.  Let me just be blunt -- this is not nearly as healthy as some other kettle popcorn but I've also found much worse in terms of cholesterol and transfat neither of which are in any of these three varieties.

This did look different from the previous two bags.  First, no chips and that's good because the white chocolate will add fat and calories so we don't need the chips from a nutritional perspective.  Second there is clear layering here. The dark chocolate was drizzled first then the white.

Over all I liked the first bag best.  The dark fudge variety wasn't different enough from the fudge variety and the white chocolate, well, you all know by now, Sisters and Brothers, that it isn't my favorite chocolate choice ever.  I just wish it were called Popcorn New Jersey since that is where this is made.  Regardless of my personal feelings about the flavors is the sad fact that these varieties are no listed on the company's website nor have I seen them in stores. Were they holiday specials only?

I've honestly never seen chocolate popcorn before. It sounds very interesting. This was my first visit to your site and, like it or not, you've become my chocolate point person:-). I'll be back often. I hope you have a great evening. Blessings...Mary
Mary, I'm so glad you stopped in, read, and left a comment. Comments give me and the six wonderful Acolytes who volunteer their time the extra energy we need to keep up the reviews. I hope you become a follower and spread the word. We'll probably do more contests and giveaways in the future though we are currently taking a break after a very busy end of 2010 on that front.

I am a huge fan of Moose Munch, so I can see the jump to chocolate covered popcorn would not be hard for me.
I've had that Moose Munch and I've seen a few recipes on some food blogs for chocolate drizzled popcorn recently. It is just odd that the company website doesn't list these. I'd think they'd sell year around.

Oh man....I love kettle corn....you thrown in chocolate and I'm just a gonner.
I like kettle corn, too. I bet I could figure out how to drizzle chocolate on to the low fat kettle corn we make at home.
Cannot go wrong with chocolate and popcorn. Love your blog. Thanks for sharing!
Thanks for reading and commenting, Christine. Come back on Saturdays for our big featured full sensory reviews.
