Two weeks ago, a reader who was loving these peanut butter cup showdowns, gave me a Justin's Dark Chocolate 2-cup package. I think it is unfair to compare dark to milk chocolates just as it would be unfair to compare white to dark chocolates or milk to white chocolates. While we cover all types of chocolate here on The Chocolate Cult, we try to be fair about the comparisons starting with the general types of chocolate -- white, milk, and dark. Let's compare a few other dark versions of peanut butter cups starting with Justin's vs Chocolove.
Both come in 2-cup sleeves that I found at Target or my local Co-op grocery store. The Chocolove has a heart inscribed on the bottom so I took the comparison from the bottom then the Chocolove on top of the Justin's. You can see that the Chocolove is a bit smaller but also darker in color.
It isn't until I cut them in half that you can see that the Chocolove cups are thicker. Inside the peanut butter filling looks very similar. The Chocolove has thicker chocolate around the filling.
Eating them reveals that dark chocolate in the Justin's is not the initial flavor but it builds with each chew, the peanut butter filling is creamy and has a powerful roasted flavor. The flavor is so intense that I must rinse out my mouth and wait a while before the next test of the Chocolove version which smells more chocolatey, has a very dark slightly bitter chocolate flavor at every stage of eating it to the point of drowning out the peanut butter. I think I like the Justin's more in terms of balance but the Chocolove in terms of chocolate.
