Creepy Confections in Short-Story Form

On this blog we look at all things chocolate and that means not only foods and beverages but related items. In honor of Halloween 2020 approaching, I'm going to share a book review about Bites of Terror: 10 Frightfully Delicious Tales by Cuddles and Rage. This is a fix-up, a group of short stories that follow an overarching story, told in comic book fashion but made with models of anthropomorphic foods. Think Tales from the Crypt meets food and you have a general idea of what this book is like. I'm going to lay out the content of this book without supplying spoilers to help you decide if this might be a fun gift for someone you love this Halloween season. I received a free copy of this book via the Amazon Vine program in exchange for writing a book review on the Amazon website; this article is an unexpected bonus for them.

The title promises ten stories but really there are eleven in this book because the framing story is a unified tale as well. We meet the Cake Creeper who looks like a damaged and deranged cakepop, his assistant and friend Eyevon, and a late night guest who is a birthday cupcake. CC is making a new friend for himself and as he adds ingredients from his collection of items from other living foods, his magic cauldron shows us a new story.

The stories are arranged into three menu categories: Starters, Mains, and Desserts. As you might imagine, the chocolate and cocoa food characters are part of the final category and the most chocolatey themed tale is called "Death by Chocolate" which had a happy twist. In fact, several of the stories have twists to what you may think is going on. I think my favorites are "Death by Chocolate," "Don't Cry," and "Make a Wish."

The subjects covered in the stories include murder, trickery, magic, and corruption so that might see intense and scary but for me as an adult, I found them more cute and engaging, not frightening. The style of the art, humanized foods, may make this seem appropriate for children but I caution against showing this to small kids or people who seem to struggle with the concept of anthropomorphism. For the rest of us, these stories will make us think and laugh at the same time.
