Will Chocolate Survive Climate Change?

Here's some food for thought, pun intended.

I want to know what you think. So read the linked to article by Sierra Garcia and share your thoughts in a comments, please. The article should open in a new window if you are reading this on a computer making it easy for you to come back and comment.

Here are my thoughts.

As long as there is someone willing to pay for it, chocolate will survive.

That is the question that this blog, The Chocolate Cult, has ever been interested in. We are about the average person, the person like you and me, who loves chocolate but who also wants the best chocolate for their money, who wants to know that their grandkids and great grandkids and their kids will have good chocolate for generations to come.

We have chocolate because we are lucky.

Or must I remind you that cocoa trees grow in a limited area of the globe, on one planet that we know of?

This isn't politics. This isn't your god or your science. This is just plain old reality.

When the climate changes, regardless of why, where chocolate can grow will change.

You may well not be able to afford it.

If you complain now about the price of chocolate now, get ready for even crappier products at much higher prices. Or perhaps you are fine with it returning to being a luxury item as it previously was for centuries?

Or maybe we'll get super lucky and the area it can grow will expand.

Will it be able to travel to somewhere to be processed for you to buy it?

Or will you be able to afford to travel to it?

There are many stages to turning those little cocoa beans into that chocolate you may so casually pop into your mouth.

So read the article and tell me what you think.

I think we may have left our change for a happy chocolate future behind a few decades past sadly.
