Can these Keto Turtles Do the Trick for National Pecan Day?

April 14th will be National Pecan Day so in honor of that, I'm sharing my experiences with my favorite type of pecan chocolate treat: Turtles! In this case, I'm looking at the No Sugar Company's Keto Shellz's product that promises all the flavor of chocolate, pecans, and caramel with zero sugar. That seems like a big promise with chocolate and caramel, doesn't it? As we'll see, this was achieved with artificial and alternative sweeteners that may be a problem for some folks. I received this product for free via the Amazon Vine program in exchange for a review on that website; this is a bonus article for both website and brand, so no other form of compensation was received for sharing my opinions on this treat as I used it.

First thing to note is that instead of 25 pieces, there were 28 pieces in my box that arrived. At first, I was worried because as you can see in this photo, the box had already been partly opened before I got it. I figured someone took a few turtles out of the box, I didn't expect they'd add more in!

Then I tried one. It was odd; it had almost no fragrance before and after I cut it in half to show it to you all. As you can see, the pecans are on the bottom and the caramel center is thick, it didn't ooze at all as the photo on the box suggested it would. It made only a slight sound when I bit into one. The nuts were crisp when I bit into them, too, and their roasted flavor built up with each bite as did an unpleasant aftertaste from the sweeteners used. The chocolate was milk as was the caramel sweetness, but at least they fought back and were the final flavor in my mouth. I would not recommend these based on eating one, even at only 70 calories a piece.

What are the ingredients? I was happy that chocolate liquor was first and that cocoa butter was listed, but the chocolate flavor was drowned out by the others which included: fructooligosaccharides, erythritol, soluble corn fibre, and Stevia extract among others for a total of 17 ingredients. This fructooligosaccharides is new to me, so I looked it up, and it is found in foods that I would never mix with chocolate including onion, chicory, garlic, asparagus, banana, artichoke. I'm not claiming that carb affected the flavor, but something did and it wasn't the ingredients I'm familiar with. If you still want to check it out, use the links included, but I cannot recommend this product at all.

I wonder if the fructooligosaccharides are lab-made or extracted from plants. If the latter, could they cause problems for people with allergies?
Thanks for reading and commenting. I don't if they would cause allergic reactions, but I'd be shocked if they didn't cause digestive issues for some people.
