Ferrero Rocher Goes to Bars

If you brand Ferrero Rocher is familiar to you, I'm sure it conjures up images of gold wrapped balls of chocolate that can adore tables set for holidays or special events. Now the brand has expanded into chocolate bars. Today I'm going to look at two of their new milk chocolate bars and let you decide if these might be great holiday treats or just snacks to add to your shopping list. I got both the Milk Chocolate with Hazelnut bar and the Milk Chocolate with Hazelnut and Almonds bar via the Amazon Vine program in exchange for my reviewing both products on that website. Today's feature article on The Chocolate Cult is a bonus that neither brand expected. No other form of compensation was received for sharing my experiences with you all.

First thing to note is that the plastic wrapper inside the paper wrapper for each bar is golden. This is a direct reference to the gold wrapped balls that we all associate with the Ferrero Rocher brand.

We'll start with the Milk Chocolate with Hazelnut bar. Again we see the reference to the balls the brand is known for in the small domes on top of eight of the 15 sections that bar is scored into. You can also see the tiny pieces of hazelnut beneath the surface of the bar. I try a section with the dome on it. The fragrance is really a sweet, creamy chocolate, with a hint of hazelnut. The bar is soft so each bite is easy; there is no sound because there is no crunch. The flavor is primarily sweet and then the hazelnut appears, a creaminess builds up with each chew as does a light chocolatiness. This is definitely candy both by taste and by ingredient list where sugar comes first.

Now I'll share the Milk Chocolate with Hazelnut and Almonds bar with you. This looks exactly like the previous bar, but I took individual photos to document if there was any difference. The scent for this bar is slightly less sweet, a hint less hazelnut, but I can't say that I really get a fragrance of almond at this point. This section is a bit more firm to bite into and there is soft crunch with the first few bites. The creamy chocolate is the beginning flavor for this bar and it returns as the final flavor, but the almonds overwhelm the hazelnuts completely. If you are so-so about almonds, this is not the bar for you. If you love hazelnut, also not the bar for you, stick with the first bar we covered.

Of the two bars, I preferred the Milk Chocolate with Hazelnut because I prefer that tree nut with milk chocolate more than I like almonds. It really depends on which nut you want most as to which bar will please you most. The milk chocolate itself is too sweet for my enjoyment, I couldn't handle more than one or two sections in any given hour because of the sugar intensity. If you know someone or you love sweet milk chocolate and either one or both of these nuts, give this a try if you can find it.
