Treats for National Almond Butter Day

Since June 29th is National Almond Butter Day, I wanted to share this article with you all today just in case you like what we discovered about this product and want to check it out for yourself. The GoodSAM Almond Butter Cups combine this forthcoming fun food holiday with one of our favorite candy types: nut butter cups with chocolate (either milk or dark preferred). The trick when trying new nut butter products is to test them for what they are and not compare them to peanut butter. In this type of treat I expect a strong almond flavor, creaminess, strong chocolate, and hopefully limited sweetness. Before I get to the results of our testing, let's get the legalities out of the way. I was sent a free bag of this product to test and then write a review on via the Amazon Vine program; no other form of compensation was received for this article today.

The 15 silver foiled wrapped mini cups are non-descriptive, no name or image on them so be careful of setting this out if you want to share them. Remember, while peanut allergies get a lot of media attention, a lot of people are allergic to tree nuts, so for them, these are not healthy alternatives. Each cup is 0.75 inch diameter on the bottom and 1 inch diameter on the top and stands about 0.75 inch high.

The cups themselves have more of the almond butter filling than chocolate candy coating as you can see in the photo to the right. The cups have a darker chocolate scent before you cut them open, but still a hint of almond. In fact, cocoa mass and cocoa butter are the third and fourth ingredients on the list, so I'm hoping they have a strong chocolate flavor. When I eat one of the halves, I'm disappointed. Yes, the chocolate is strong and certainly on the more bitter side, something that I should love, but there is also a burnt flavor that I do not like at all which nearly covers up all of the almond flavor. Trying to eat an entire cup at once improves the experience somewhat, increasing the chocolate and letting out some sweetness versus the burnt flavor. Over all it isn't as good as it should be and I hope the manufacturer will consider tweaking their recipe to improve it.
