There is a new lawsuit related to chocolate that I thought you all might want to know about.
I read it in my local newspaper, but since you'd have to have a subscription to read it, I found basically the same article here.
Hopefully no one reading this is okay with slave labor or most child labor, cocoa farming or not.
I say "most" because family farms, and there are still some in the cocoa industry, have always required help from all members of a family. The difference is help versus forced labor or labor that prevents the child from getting an education or being able to experience life as a child.
If you know anything about chocolate, you should know that it has a long history of slave and child labor associated with it since at least Europeans started getting involved, but I suspect even before then given the value of cocoa beans.
My big concern with this new lawsuit is the USA's Supreme Court decision a few years back. If you are unfamiliar with that, you can read about it here. While I think the cases are different, I'm not a lawyer.
I look forward to reading your comments about this issue.
