Justin's vs Skinny Dipped Dark Chocolate Peanut Butter Cup

Another in our Peanut Butter Cup Showdown series here on The Chocolate Cult. We are focused on the dark chocolate varieties and this time we are comparing Justin's to Skinny Dipped. I used coupons to help cover the costs of these products to test and write about today.

As you can see the thickness difference between the two is not great, but the Justin's is lighter in color for both the chocolate and the peanut butter. The Justin's does seem to have more chocolate because of the side thickness compared to the other brand. Justin's also has a larger radius at just under 2 inches versus just over 1.5 inches for Skinny Dipped.

Since the Justin's is lighter in color I suspect the flavor will be less dark chocolate so let's test out my theory. The fragrance is a mix of slightly sweet chocolate and peanut, but it doesn't smell strongly of either. When I cut a cup in half, the inside as flakey and it is dry as well as almost bland. The chocolate coating builds up in intensity with each bite and it does make a sound with each bite as well testifying to the fact that it is thick. The chocolate is a good balance of sweet and bitter, but the peanut butter truly disappoints. One cup is 110 calories or 220 per pack.

I recently had the Skinny Dipped and it this test was from the same batch so no difference. This does make a snap when I bite into it and for a few chews. The chocolate is much darker in flavor and it is so intense that it dries out my mouth by the second half of the cup. The peanut butter is roasted but not really sweet; even though I can't see them, there are tiny bits that crunch when I chew. The aftertaste is bitter as expected with little sugar added. One cup is 80 calories.

I'll be blunt: I'm not impressed by the two in this comparison and wouldn't buy or eat them again just for fun.
